A guide to planning a destination wedding in the Smoky Mountains, from choosing Townsend to planning from afar and getting your guests here.
For some couples, a destination wedding means flying in from across the country to say “I do” surrounded by mountains. For others, it means a few hours’ drive from another corner of Tennessee or a neighboring state to somewhere that feels a world away from home. Either way, a mountain destination wedding in the Smokies gives you and your guests a reason to slow down, settle in, and make a weekend of it.
If you’re planning a destination wedding in the Smoky Mountains from out of town, here’s what to know about where to go, how to plan it all from a distance, how to get there, and where your guests can stay.

The Great Smoky Mountains are the most visited national park in the country, and it’s easy to see why so many couples choose to get married in the Smokies. Rolling ridgelines, rivers, and changing seasons give every Tennessee destination wedding a backdrop that doesn’t need much decorating.
But where you land in the Smokies shapes the entire experience. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are known for attractions, crowds, and bumper-to-bumper traffic. Townsend, known as the peaceful side of the Smokies, sits right at the edge of the national park and a short drive from Cades Cove, with quiet roads, open valley views, and a small-town pace.
For a wedding weekend, that difference matters. Your guests spend their time hiking, floating the river, and relaxing on a cabin porch instead of sitting in traffic.
When you can’t stop by on a Saturday afternoon, the venue’s website becomes your first tour. Look for professional photography of every space and 360° walkthroughs that let you explore each ceremony site, reception space, and suite from home. Use them to narrow your choices, then plan one in-person visit to walk the property, meet the team, and scout lodging while you’re there.
A responsive venue team that knows the area can help keep your plans on track and recommend trusted local vendors. When tables, chairs, setup, and cleanup are included and a decor package is available, there’s far less to source, pack, and bring from home. On-site suites for the bride, groom, and wedding party help too, so no one is driving back and forth from a cabin in a dress or tux on the wedding day.

Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) is the closest airport to Townsend, about a 30 to 35 minute drive away. Guests can land, pick up a rental car, and be settled in before dinner. Since the airport sits south of Knoxville in Alcoa, the drive to Townsend skips city traffic altogether.
For couples and guests coming from elsewhere in Tennessee or a neighboring state, Townsend makes an easy road trip. Approximate drive times:
Knoxville: about 45 minutes
Chattanooga: about 2 hours
Asheville, NC: about 2 hours
Nashville: about 3 hours
Lexington, KY: about 3.5 hours
Atlanta, GA: about 3.5 to 4 hours
Charlotte, NC: about 4 hours
Birmingham, AL: about 4.5 hours
It’s close enough for a long weekend and far enough to feel like an escape. The best Smoky Mountain wedding venues feel secluded while still being easy to reach, so grandparents and first-time visitors aren’t navigating steep, winding drives.

Townsend and the surrounding area offer lodging for every style and budget, from private cabins and vacation rentals to small inns, riverside campgrounds, and glamping sites. Hotels in nearby Maryville and Alcoa are also close to the airport.
Some destination venues bundle lodging into weekend packages with minimum-night stays. When lodging is booked separately, every guest can choose what fits. A college roommate can grab an affordable room for one night while the grandparents rent a cabin for the week, keeping an affordable destination wedding within reach for everyone.
